Mobility Aid Carriage – Ferry Services
Port Phillip Ferries is committed to providing accessible services in line with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, while ensuring the safety and comfort of all passengers.
What we accept
We welcome passengers travelling with mobility aids, including:
- Wheelchairs
- Mobility scooters
- Walking aids
- Other devices used to support mobility (including modified tricycles where applicable)
How access is assessed
Mobility aids are considered on a case-by-case basis. We aim to make reasonable adjustments wherever it is safe and practicable to do so.
Conditions of travel
To travel on board, mobility aids must:
- Be able to be safely boarded and manoeuvred
- Fit within available space without blocking walkways or exits
- Not pose a risk to passengers, crew, or vessel operations
Priority and space availability
- Designated spaces are prioritised for wheelchairs and mobility scooters
- Other mobility aids may be accommodated where space is available
- At busy times, access may be limited due to safety requirements
Operational decisions
Final decisions are made by the vessel Master on the day, based on:
- Passenger numbers
- Weather and sea conditions
- Vessel layout and safety considerations
Supporting information
In some cases, we may ask for simple supporting information to confirm that a device is used as a mobility aid.
Assessments
For non-standard mobility aids, we may arrange a quick on-site assessment to confirm safe boarding and storage.
When we may be unable to carry a device
We may not be able to accommodate a mobility aid if:
- It cannot be handled safely
- It blocks access or emergency pathways
- It would prevent access for priority mobility aid users
We will always aim to explain decisions clearly and work with you on alternative options where possible.
